From Fueling to Foot Traffic: Channeling the Power of Retail Media Networks

903 stores. 14,000 screens. 36 markets. That is the operational footprint of a new Eletromidia–Impulso integration inside RD Saúde pharmacies in Brazil, according to Sixteen:Nine.

From Fueling to Foot Traffic: Channeling the Power of Retail Media Networks

The deployment routes digital out-of-home inventory into a retail media network with closed-loop attribution from street furniture to checkout counter.

System Architecture

Two operators, one data spine. Eletromidia supplies the urban DooH layer — street furniture and elevator displays surrounding RD Saúde locations. Impulso controls the in-store screen infrastructure inside the pharmacies. The handoff is the product: a brand running on Eletromidia's perimeter panels continues into Impulso's checkout-adjacent screens once the consumer crosses the threshold.

  • Coverage: 903 RD Saúde stores under activation, 14,000+ connected screens, 36 Brazilian markets including São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Porto Alegre, Recife, and Fortaleza
  • Backbone operator: RD Saúde, parent of Raia and Drogasil, runs 3,000+ pharmacies across all 27 Brazilian states

Targeting Logic & Closed-Loop Attribution

The campaign engine reacts to three variables: location, time of day, weather. Sixteen:Nine documents the following deterministic content swaps:

  • Cold or rainy periods → flu remedies, vitamins, health supplements
  • Hot days → sunscreens, moisturizers, skincare
  • Morning windows → energy, wellness, productivity
  • Evening windows → relaxation and sleep-support products

The in-store layer adds digital storefront displays, health-content channels, and screens near counters and checkout. Stated objective: incremental and complementary purchases, not raw visibility.

The distinguishing technical claim is end-to-end measurement. Exposure from the DooH layer reconciles with sales data, producing a feedback signal advertisers can optimize against at regional and store level. That mechanism — exposure-to-purchase in one dataset — is the structural feature pulling out-of-home inventory into commerce media stacks.

Adjacent Signals & Technical Trade-offs

Three additional developments point in the same direction:

  • Academy Sports has launched its own retail media network, per SGB Media
  • Convenience Store News is covering retail media networks converting fuel stops into foot-traffic funnels
  • Yahoo Finance reports Ascendant Network has assembled sponsors for SHOWCASE, positioned as the first retail + commerce media upfront

Gas stations, pharmacies, sporting-goods aisles — all are being re-platformed as retail media inventory with attribution wired in. For commerce operators, the operational question is whether POS and exposure data can be reconciled cleanly enough to make a per-store buy defensible.

Pros: measurable lift at store level; contextual relevance at the screen; single buy covering pre-entry and in-store

Cons: dependency on retailer POS integration; weather and time logic require continuous creative versioning; scale gated by partner footprint
